Packers Cut Punter Jon Ryan

Weird.
The Packers have signed punter Derrick Frost and long snapper Brett Goode. They have released punter Jon Ryan and Abdul Hodge.

Ted Thompson, who wasn't scheduled to speak today, will address reporters after practice before coach Mike McCarthy speaks.

Not only do the Packers have a week to get Goode acclimated -- that was known after J.J. Jansen was placed on injured reserve -- but now they have get a new punter/field goal holder ready as well.

Ryan's release is surprising. Among active punters with at least two years service, Ryan is third in the league with a 44.5 average. He trails just Shane Lechler (46.5) and Mat McBriar (44.7) in that state. Frost has a 41.1.

It would seem that Ryan is the superior punter to Frost. I'm curious to see if there is a back story here or if the Packers just prefer directional punters to boomers.
