SI Ranks Badgers #10

SI has The Mighty Badgers at #10 to open the season with a January 1 Bowl Game against USC (ranked #3). Here's the Top 10.

  1. Georgia
  2. Dog-Ass Ohio State Buckeyes
  3. USC
  4. Missouri
  5. Florida
  6. Oklahoma
  7. Auburn
  8. Texas Tech
  9. LSU
  10. Wisconsin
SI is making its predicition based on the unique skills of Travis Beckum (assuming someone can get him the ball), the running game, led by P.J. Hill and nine starters on defense.

Personally, I think they're over-rated at this point. The QB slot is still a crap shoot until Everedge proves otherwise and Bucky still hasn't shown they can stop the spread offense. By my calculation, Michigan, Purdue, Northwestern, Illinois, Michigan State, Indiana, and Minnesota run a version of the spread. I think Fresno State, the first road test for Bucky, does as well.

Still, the OLine returns four starters and maybe the best way to stop the spread is keep a big edge in time of possession via the ground game.

I've heard rumors out of Madison that Bielema is using some spread formations, mostly to benefit Beckum but as an article in SI points out, one of the advantages to the spread is that it opens up the ground game, too since the defense is spread out all over the field.

We'll see. The early ranking will make it hard for Bucky to sneak up on anyone but if they can figure out the spread defense and pound the ball as usual, they'll be in a bowl. BTW, the Big 10 looks really weak this year.
