Stat of the Day: Pitcher Abuse Points

In an attempt to determine how much risk of injury a given pitcher has, BP invented Pitcher Abuse Points. The damage done to a pitchers arm is cumulative, and becomes more severe as the pitcher throws more in a given appearance. In other words, a 130 pitch outing will hurt a pitcher more than throwing 90 pitches on short rest. Rest, as it turns out, is slightly overrated.

Anyway, here are your top 5 leader in PAP for 2008 so far:

1. Ben Sheets - 47896
2. Gil Meche - 47360
3. Ricky Nolasco - 42381
4. Cole Hamels - 40005
5. CC Sabathia - 37045

No, that is not good. Veterans can take more of a pounding than young guys, but still, you really don't want two guys in the top 5.
