Jeter Still Sucks At Defense

At the annual SABR convention there is a separate wing devoted to research proving that Derek Jeter sucks at defense. Writing at Slate, Nate DiMeo does an excellent job of looking through all of that research and taking on the battle between statheads and yokels:

If the sabermetric case against Jeter's glove has long been closed, why do the sabermetricians keep opening it? In an e-mail, Tom Tango joked that Jeter comes up again and again "because he gets far more girls than his fielding talents should allow."

The Yankees have had a few championships in the last decade or so, but they've also had a bunch of near-misses. I can't help wondering if Jeter's insistence on playing short over the superior A-Rod might have cost them a World Series or two. And just maybe, allowed Boston to win its first since man tamed fire. They did, after all, have a 3 games to none lead.

Well done, captain!
